Explaining the terminology of sustainability

ESG

ESG stands for Environment, Social, Governance. It is a common way to divide the concept of sustainability into three different areas. The term ESG is common in the finance sector, where it is used to evaluate companies from a sustainability perspective. At Stena Metall we have named our ESG areas: Care for the Environment, Care for People, Care for Sustainable Business.

CSRD

CSRD stands for Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, and is a new EU directive for sustainability reporting. Publicly listed companies will have to report according to the standards from 2024. All large companies (€40 million in net turnover and more than 250 employees) from 2025, and publicly listed small companies from 2026. Stena Metall will report according to CSRD for the first time in the sustainability report for the accounting year 2025/2026. Leise Marud, sustainability specialist, gives a deeper look into CSRD.

EU taxonomy

The EU Taxonomy Regulation is a classification system that establishes if an economic activity is sustainable. All large companies will have to rapport on EU taxonomy in their sustainability reports. Stena Metall will report according to the EU Taxonomy for the first time in the sustainability report for the accounting year 2025/2026.

SBTi and net zero

Science-based targets are climate targets that are in line with the goal of the Paris Agreement, aiming to limit global warming to maximum 1,5°C. 

Stena Recycling and Stena Aluminium have both sent in separate commitments to set climate targets in accordance with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In 2023, Stena Recycling received approval from SBTi on its targets. Every year Stena Recycling will publish a Climate Impact Report about its progress.

UN Global Compact

The UN Global Compact is a voluntary sustainability initiative for companies. It is one of the biggest and most well-known sustainability initiatives in the world.
